John C. Meserve began his career in horticulture and arboriculture over 30 years ago, and has been consulting in northern California since 1984. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental (Ornamental) Horticulture in 1977 from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, graduating with academic honors. Following graduation he worked as a state licensed landscape contractor, state licensed pest control advisor and operator, and retail nursery manager. He also has experience as a commercial plant propagator, production grower, production manager, and sales manager at large wholesale nurseries in southern and northern California. Meserve has been an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist (WCISA #0478) since 1989, and graduated from the American Society of Consulting Arborists consulting academy in 1999.

Meserve has enjoyed the opportunities to share his knowledge with design students in the School of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. As an adjunct faculty member for four years, he taught courses in Landscape Horticulture and Field identification of Landscape Plants. He has also taught for the University of California Extension program at Berkeley.


An active member of his local community, he volunteers as a youth mentor, Rotary Club member, and Restorative Justice volunteer. Most comfortable anywhere in natural settings, he enjoys camping, hiking, gardening, traveling, and hanging out with his golden retrievers.
